Probus
Ch urch is dedicated to St Probus, about whom nothing is known. The parish
is di rectly north of Tregony, the village being on
the A390 between Truro and St.Au stell. A new by-pass has considerably
reduced traffic on this road. The churc h, constructed
of Cornish granite dominates the village. The 125ft tower is th e highest
in the county.

PALAEOLITHIC (EARLY STONE AGE)
From 400,000 BC to 200,000 BC, the archaeological record
(ie. flint axes and b lades) shows us that people, that were
probably settled in Devon, were beginni ng to make periodic
visits into Cornwall. By 40,000 BC (The Upper Palaeolithic )
these modern humans (Homo Sapiens Sapiens) had spread
throughout the South West, but there is still no evidence
of
settlements in Cornwall at this time (as yet).
10,000
MESOLITHIC (MIDDLE STONE AGE)
This period begins at the en d of the last glacial period,
when
water levels began to rise, and hunter-ga therer bands began
to settle around the coastlines of Cornwall, around the
L izard,
for example, and had working sites on upland areas, such as
Bodmin Moo r.
4,000 -
2,400
NEOLITHIC (NEW STONE AGE)
The Neolithic period was a time of great social and
agricultural development. This can be seen through the
ad option of farming and increased monument construction,
brought about largely b y an increasing population.
Settlements then began to be fortified such as the one on
top of Carn Brea.
2,400 -
1,500
EARLY BRONZE AGE
This period is d efined by the introduction of metalworking,
especially in bronze, which used C ornwalls natural
resources
of tin and copper.
These sources were found by tin-streaming and open-cast
mining for copper.
The period is also characteris ed by its
ceremonial and burial monuments: the
stone circles, rows and standi ng stones or
menhirs, and the barrows with their kist
graves.
1,500 - 600
B C
LATE BRONZE AGE
The climate began to get wetter during this period which
c aused settlement movement to lowland sites such as
Trethellan, Newquay, and a move to more seasonal and less
intensive grazing on the uplands. Population pr essure, as a
result, created a more warlike society which often
sacrificed
weapons to their gods.
600 BC - AD
43
IRON AGE
Iron gradually replaced bron ze for weapons and farming
tools.
People were starting to live in defended s ettlements called
rounds which were bank-and-ditch enclosures protecting a
nu mber of round-houses within. There were also economic
and social centres, wher e manufacturing and trading
occurred, established on hill-tops and headlands, such as
Trevelgue Head, near Newquay.

James Leaverton died at his home near Milton, Iowa, Aug. 30, 1908. Havi ng been in failing health for some months past he took his bed about Au g. 1st and gradually grew weaker until the evening of Aug. 30th when he qu ietly passed away.
The deceased was born near Richmond, Indiana, Oct. 24, 1823, making h im 84 years, 10 months and 6 days old at the time of his death. He was marri ed to Lucretia Nance Feb. 8, 1849, to this union ten children were born, t wo dying in infancy and the eldest son John W. died near Des Moines, Iow a, Apr. 24, 1903. The children who survive him are Mrs. Sarah Price, of Mi lton, Ia., Mrs. Clara Holmes, Mitchell, S. D., G. W. Leaverton, Alimosa, C ol., James Jr. of Milton, Ia., W. S., of Granger, Ia., O. The deceased came with his wife and small son to Iowa, in the fall of 1 750 [probably 1850] and settled on a farm three and one-half miles northea st of Milton, where he has since lived. He was received into the M. E. Chu rch when a small child but was never an active member of the church.
He was a kind husband and father, a good neighbor, very firm in his way s, but honest and upright in all his dealings with men. Uncle Jimm y, as he was familiarly called will be greatly missed in his home and t he community in which he lived.
The funeral was held Tuesday the 1st of September at the home at 2 p. m ., and the remains laid to rest in the New Cemetery in Milton Aurora Lod ge No. 50 A. F. & A. M. having charge of the services at the grave.
Thus another good man has gone and one that will be greatly missed in t he community and neighborhood. | James LEAVERTON

FROM THE WESTERN MORNING NEWS DATED 16 MARCH 1998:
Headmaster leads tributes to Army bus crash victim.
A Westcountry woman has been named as one of the victims of a minibus crash in Germany. Emma Leverton, 19, from Shortlanesend, near Truro, died when she was thrown from a minibus when it was hit by a 20-ton truck on a French motorway. She was member of seven strong British Army basketball team based in Germany. The team were in the unmarked Army mimibus when it stopped 10 miles from Calais due to mechanical failure. Emma and two other young women where killed instantly. The talented young sportswoman was a member of 7 Regiment, the Royal Logistic Corps, based at Bielefeld, Germany. Until she joined the Army a few months ago, she worked at the Truro branch of Woolworth and Sainsbury. Woolworth
s manager Hugh Jones said: "She used to work here after she finished school and was very popular. A lot of people were very upset to hear of her death." Emma had been a pupil of Richard Lander School at Truro from 1989 - 94, where headteacher Trevor Coldman praised her achievements. " She was a lovely girl and very prominent in PE. She was so dedicated to sport that she came back to the school and did work experience in the PE department." Emma
s brother mark lives at Goonhavern and their mother recently moved from Shortlanesend to Poole,Dorset. | Emma Jane LEVERTON

Ladock
Village is named after patron saint of church, St Ladoca, and although
there are many legendary tales about her, nothing is
definitely known. The p arish is in the centre of Cornwall on the A390
about five miles north-west of Truro, and until 1840 was
on the old toll road from Truro to Bodmin. In 1802 the largest gold
nugget found in Cornwall was discovered in the River
Ladock and is now in Truro Museum.
