Francis was a poet and had a book of poems published in 1855 entitled THE EXILE'S LAY
FROM A HISTORY OF TRANS ALPINE, THE SOUTHERNMOST PART OF THE TOWN OF LINCOLN, MAINE
BEYOND THE ALPS. BY MAY EDWARDS BAILEY. 1935:
FRANCIS YELLAND, son of John Yelland, was b. in St. Stevens, Cornwall County,
England, in 1823. At the age of 22 he came to America, leaving Liverpool Apr. 12, 1845,
he arrived in Boston in 35 days. He soon procured work, as he was, a good mechanic. He
m. Catherine, dau. of Henry Yelland, in May 1846. She had come come over here with her
sister two years before. She was from Truro, England. They first settled in Chelsea,
Mass.; the next year they came to Trans Alpine and bought some land for a farm, below
the Peter Coburn Place; that fall they went back to Mass., and he worked at his trade,
painting, until 1860, when they returned to T. A. and bought the Peter Coburn farm and
lived there until his death in 1885. Mr.Yelland was a poet; he published a book of
poems: "The Exile's Lay and Other Poems." We are enclosing a poem written by him on the
death of a child. Mrs.Yelland used to come over across the pasture to Grandmother
Edwards' quite often. She was a fast talker. She spent the last years of her life with
her dau., Elmyra Phinney, on upper Main Street in Lincoln Village. They were very nice
people and were greatly missed when they left the neighborhood. He d. in 1885 at the
age of 61. She d. in 1906 at the age of 86.
ROCK ME TO SLEEP
By FRANCIS YELLAND
The beauteous on Nettie's cheek
Had turned to lily white.
The stars within her azure eyes
Had lost their radiant light.
She suffered, but did not repine;
No tear-drops filled her eyes.
Who could but know that Angels were
Then beckoning from the skies.
Rock me to sleep' she softly said,
While laboring hard for breath;
Alas! she knew not it would be
Her long last sleep of death.
Full well her weeping parents knew,
(Who heard with rending pain)
That when their little darling slept,
She ne'er would wake again.
As if in haste to join the host,
That beckoned from the skies;
Rock me to sleep' in feeble tones
Full often would arise.
They rocked her till the sun went down,
Behind the purple hill.
And while the watchers wept around,
Her spirit lingered still.
When closing were the shades of night,
This little favorite dove
Unfurled her wings and took her flight,
To brighter realms above;
Yes, like a little fragile bark,
Into safe harbor driven,
Sweet little Nettie fell asleep,
And woke again in Heaven.
Lincoln, Maine, April 15, 1864.
In memory of Nettie, daughter of Stephen and Joan Delano
In Lincoln Maine's United Methodist Church, there is a stained glass window dedicated
to Francis and Catherine It was apparently given to the church by the Phinney
grandchildren of Francis & Catherine (Viola, and another granddaughter in the 1920s).
