Thomas Yelland was born about 1577 in
South Brent, Devon, the son of John Yelland and Margaret Cholwell. The family
used the alias Welbrooke, possibly to avoid religious persecution. Thomas married
Mary Lyston on the 6 Aug 1599 in South Brent. Around 1605, after the birth of
his first three children, he moved to St.Stephen in Brannel, Cornwall. His descendants remained in the parish for
the next 200 years, mainly as tenant farmers of the Boconnoc Estate, the
principal landowner of the parish.
From the early 1800’s onwards, with the
growth of the china clay industry, many of the family moved into this new
industry as labourers, clay agents and captains. Also from around this time,
many Yellands moved to adjacent parishes and beyond, and some emigrated to
America and Australia.
The tree below charts the tenancies of the
various farms as passed down through the generations to 1841. The information
is taken mainly from surviving wills and other parish records. The names in
blue at the bottom of the tree are all the Yelland farmers in the 1841 census
of St.Stephen.
