  • The High Sheriff appeals for aid to prevent "severe distress and great destitution" in Cornwall. Between 1860 and 1870 700 people die of poverty-related diseases in Truro alone

  • Women in UK obtain limited rights to retain their property after marriage
1877 
  • The first use of a high-pressure hose in the extraction of Cornish china-clay is introduced by the West Of England Company, but is sabotaged by the workers

  • Education becomes compulsory for children under ten in UK

  • Walter Langley settles in Newlyn, Cornwall, the first of those who become known as artists of the Newlyn School to reside

  • Married women in UK obtain the right to acquire their own property
13 1890 
  • Bob Fitzsimmons of Helston, Cornwall is the first native Briton heavy-weight boxing champion
14 1891 
  • 9 Mar 1891: A blizzard swept through Cornwall bringing snowdrifts up to 20 feet deep. But it is the hurricane force wind that causes most damage: over 200 lives are lost, the majority at sea where 63 ships founder. Upwards of 6,000 sheep and lambs die, and half a million trees are brought down
